Over 40 and connected?

Are people over 40 part of the connected generation?

To a large extent, the connected lifestyle belongs to Gen X (1965–1979) and Gen Y (1980–1997) – a young, tech-savvy group of proactive consumers and brand members. This connected generation is changing the rules and reinventing the infrastructure of the marketplace, and shifting revenue models and expectations.

Yet, it would be inaccurate and misleading to say that age or technological comfort are the only characteristics of the connected generation. We all know people over 40 who are clearly leaders in this new consumer playground. This is how we realized that the connected generation’s DNA is also defined by a worldview.

If you embrace this worldview, your age and technological know-how becomes a minor issue (let’s face it – things change so quickly that we’re all scrambling to stay current). Over the next few weeks we will present the values that define the connected generation’s worldview. We’ve identified five critical traits – experience, transparency, reinvention, connection, and expression.

Please post your thoughts. What else is essential to the connected generation’s worldview?

i think a love of “instant information” is definitely essential. there’s a big gap between people who are content in not knowing something, and people who will instantly look up what they don’t know on google.

Not to be too picky, but time does march on. It’s now possible to be Gen X and over 40. sigh

Good point, Nathan. I guess 40 feels more like a psychological cutoff point more than a hard-and-fast math equation.
