Reinventing the Internship: Ready to Launch
The Connected Generation Podcast: Reinventing the Internship: Ready to Launch, Episode 70![]()
In the first episode of our new series, Reinventing the Internship, Lisa and I help you get into the mind of the young talent that is coming into your organization as we discuss their sometimes disorienting transition from education to career.
Many of the new hires entering the professional world have come from a setting where they are involved in multiple communities, participate in collaborative/team environments and have engaged teachers/coaches who invest in their personal development. When they enter the workforce, that isn’t always the case.
As a 23-year-old woman who works within large companies, I get to hear both the perspective of college graduates entering the workforce as well as that of the corporate managers in charge of members of this group. As you probably have already experienced or heard, there is a significant amount of frustration and confusion between these groups. It seems a few key points have been lost in translation, which we believe have caused some misunderstandings on both sides.
For this series, Lisa and I decided to rethink the internship. (We chose the internship because it is a small and smart way for companies to test out the concepts and slowly introduce changes to their corporate culture.) Over the next few episodes, we’ll introduce fresh concepts for creating internships that address both the desires of the young group of new hires as well as the needs of your organization as it operates within a modern, tech-driven marketplace.
