Storytelling for Free Agents

Reach Group Podcast1.jpgThe Connected Generation Podcast: Storytelling, Episode 74

In this episode, Lisa reveals her three signature stories that she uses to package and share her business with potential clients. Intended for the fellow entrepreneur, these three stories give a framework for telling others how you got started and what solutions you offer.

1. Start by identifying a defining story that either highlights the market need for your business or your personal abilities.

Example: “I read an article last year that said over 40% of college students who go abroad are seeking ways to give back, so I created a travel agency that combines overseas vacations with service activities.”

2. Next, explain your personal connection to the business. Describe how your business allows you to use your talents, pursue your passions, and/or work with people you care about.

Example: “When I studied abroad in Senegal (West Africa) in college, I fell in love with the people, language and culture and I extended my stay by an extra year to volunteer at a local orphanage. Using the knowledge and relationships that I gained, I’m making it possible for others to have the same life-transforming experiences.”

3. Finally, show how your background and past experiences have brought you to where you are today. What key markers affected your decision and ability to run your own business, such as trial-and-error, mistakes, serendipity, etc.

Example: “When I first started my travel agency, I catered primarily to mature travelers and families, but I found it difficult to stand out in such a saturated market. Once I realized how hungry college-age students are to volunteer overseas, I repositioned my business to serve that group and nearly quadrupled my clients by the second month.”
