The $5.99 Question: Connected Culture
The Connected Generation Podcast: The $5.99 Question: Connected Culture, Episode 51![]()
In this week’s podcast Lisa and I talk about connected culture and how technology has created new behavior trends that are shaping both online and off-line communication and social interaction.
For some, the thought of texting a colleague or inviting a peer to be a friend on MySpace seems ridiculous, if not downright inappropriate. Why? Because it’s not a part of their current culture. Lisa and I discuss the common barriers to participation that people experience as they seek to get connected and how many people struggle to understand and/or adopt new technologies because they seem to operate outside of their current social norms.
I realize that if technology isn’t your native tongue then using the new collaborative tools of the web can sometimes feel like trying to speak a foreign language in a distant land. Connectedness, however, is less of an island and more of a spectrum that we all fall within. Yes, it is a culture shift, and no, we’re not going back. (Chances are if you’re reading this blog or listening to our podcast that you’re already ahead of the curve.)
So, if you’re feeling like a foreign exchange student on a study abroad program, make a decision to spend some time with the locals to learn the language and understand the culture. Look for simple ways to introduce technology into your relationships and/or use it to fuel a passion area. (Send your daughter a text message. Google your favorite NBA team and participate in an online community. Etc.)
Get your hands dirty, have a little fun and see what happens.
