The Connected Generation At Work

Recently, we’ve received a lot of requests from companies to come in and speak about the Connected Generation within the workplace.  There’s a lot of talk about bridging the age and technology gaps that seem to be creating large disconnects within organizations.  And, typically, the larger the organization, the more Grand Canyon-like the chasm appears when you see the broad range of age and “connectedness” between the groups.

There’s seems to be confusion and frustration coming from all sides, but as a 24-year-old I’ve found that many of my friends are especially disheartened when they enter a work environment with archaic rules, hierarchy, technology or overall culture.  (Especially those students coming out of wired, Web 2.0-harnessing colleges with professors and staff such as Cole Camplese at Penn State or Susan Dobscha at Bentley, to name just a couple pioneers in education I admire.)

For the next series of blog posts we’re going to look at the values and cravings of the Connected Generation (primarily those of Gen Y) as they relate to the workplace.  Although the book, Mind Your X’s and Y’s, was written primarily from a marketing perspective, the principles cross-over to the workplace environment because, at the end of the day, it’s about people and attracting them to your brand.

What’s great about the five values and 10 cravings is that they give a language and lens to see the fundamental shift in human behavior that has been amplified and accelerated by technology.  Over the next few posts we’ll explore how this affects organizations internally.

We won’t just be looking at strategies to “recruit, hire and retain” but rather will seek to bring understanding of the worldview and desires of a younger generation of employees so that you can better inspire, partner and collaborate with this group to navigate the future together.

If you are unfamiliar with Mind Your X’s and Y’s, you can download the free booklet here, listen to the podcasts here and read the correlating blog posts by clicking on the links below.
